Chris Cohen brings ‘As If Apart’ to London

Chris Cohen has a new album and he’s headed this way in September to share its songs with Europe.

The musician, who’s just released ‘As If Apart’, reaches London on 5 September 2016 with a headline show at Cafe Oto. Tickets are available now.

Cohen, who began playing drums at the age of three and initially made a name for himself as a member of several bands including Deerhoof, finally released his debut solo album, ‘Overgrowth Path’, in 2012.

Described as a “soft psych garden of unearthly alter-pop earworms and studio-sonic delights”, its follow-up, ‘As If Apart’, continues his distinctive style of dreamy, complex, and moody pscychedelia as evidenced by the album’s woozy, ‘70s flavoured title track.

“I think of myself as more of a player who writes songs than as a songwriter or something,” Cohen recently told Stereogum. “It wasn’t like I was always dying to become my own singer-songwriter,” said the multi-instrumentalist who performed everything on the new album.

“I think of voice as an instrument, it’s almost like you’re playing this synthesizer, where you have to choose what kind of sound you want to make, what fits the musical part,” he explained of the songwriting process. “I’m more of an abstract person. Music is what comes first. Words are…I just want to add just enough meaning to add another dimension to the music, but my music-making doesn’t come from having a verbal idea I want to say and then finding musical accompaniment to it. It’s a musical idea and then [I add] just enough text to give you a little something to think about.”
